\u201cOur imaginations are incredible yet also where we idealise, fantasise and create worlds that very often don\u2019t match our realities, what actually happens.\u00a0 Trust yourself to walk towards your fears with courage, support and some deep breathing.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This year I did three things that made me reflect deeply on how I do, or do not implicitly trust myself.\u00a0 The first, I set up a fixed wheel on my bike.\u00a0 Stop laughing, I haven\u2019t grown a beard\u2026..damn, ok, hipster confirmed.\u00a0 All I heard was \u201cdon\u2019t do it, you can\u2019t control it, it\u2019s a pain if you\u2019re cycling with kids (I have two), you get the idea.\u00a0 Well, my daughter and I got knocked off our bikes two weeks ago, maybe I\u2019ll talk about this in another blog, and my wheel got bent, so I went fixie.\u00a0 I love it.\u00a0 More control, more skill, more fitness.<\/p>\n\n

Second.\u00a0 For ten years I\u2019ve wanted a Rancilio Silvia, the legendary home coffee machine that the internet raves about.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t get it, it\u2019s fiddly, it\u2019s hard to master, it\u2019s overpriced, the grinders not good.\u201d\u00a0 I got it this week.\u00a0 It\u2019s awesome.\u00a0 I\u2019m wired.\u00a0 It\u2019s a new learning curve, a new hobby, my wife loves it. Win, win, win, for the win.<\/p>\n\n

Third.\u00a0 I\u2019ve wanted to do psychotherapy training for a number of years now.\u00a0 I got a place to do it seven years ago. I didn\u2019t do it. \u201cIt\u2019s too expensive.\u00a0 60% of marriages split up during the training (four years, pretty gruelling), you miss weekends at home here and there.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve started.\u00a0 Feels incredible, I\u2019m released and stimulated in ways I haven\u2019t imagined were available to me, perhaps I thought never would be.<\/p>\n

So what was the shift?\u00a0 Why now?\u00a0 Don\u2019t get me wrong, I\u2019ve been active, run my own business for twenty years coaching people and I love it.\u00a0 Well I\u2019ll share the why.\u00a0 Last year I had a severe depression.\u00a0 I\u2019m not describing the why, there are reasons and there aren\u2019t any, however it did happen and I had a fight on my hands, a big long nasty fight, where I had to learn some new, deep things about myself, and I fought with the help and love of family and friends, professionals and a heap of acceptance.\u00a0 It opened me up.<\/p>\n

These three new interests, varying in style and scope, represent something enormous for me and I hope you can ally this with experiences in your own.\u00a0 Our time is precious.\u00a0 Our relationships are precious.\u00a0 Our breath is precious.\u00a0 The view we have that we take for granted and lose interest in is precious beyond measure, yet life dries up sometimes.\u00a0 We lose meaning.\u00a0 Our interests aren\u2019t just interests, they\u2019re rebellions, they\u2019re overthrows, they\u2019re secret missions to keep creating life, meaning, pleasure and comfort.\u00a0 Go and do what you want.<\/p>\n\n
